:Different Owner App

Redesigning the assistant to the home

Overview

A big part of the business for different is the communication between homeowners and their internal systems to provide services to them. This was all intended to be done through the different owner app, and this platform is crucial to facilitating a positive customer experience (NPS) and to reduce the cost of service through efficiency for the business.  Joining in at the end of the original app launch. The team and I came to a realisation that while yes the current app served our owners and fulfilled the brand promise of having an app, it didn't actually help with the above aforementioned goals. With that in mind, we decided to conduct a huge overhaul of the app to achieve these goals. So why the redesign? Through quantitative and qualitative research, we discovered these key insights about the app: • We had an iOS app with 40% adoption  • An app navigation/UI structure that makes it hard to build upon, it’s not future-proofed. • 25% of owners with Android devices were unsupported by a mobile app.  •We had usability issues making it difficult for owners to find crucial information. • Performance issues that prevents owners viewing important information.  • Missing information that makes connecting with our services more difficult. What really stood out that from all our discussions with owners was that they all wanted to be kept in the loop, which means have information easily accessible when they needed it. While technical limitations and scalability issues were also a concern, it was really the customer feedback that motivated and inspired us to move ahead and redesign the app.

Process

This is the part of the case study where I detail every action we did from the beginning to the end. However, redesigning a whole app from the ground up is no easy task, and it is by no means fits in a perfectly neat linear model. But what we did do over the 7 months we took to build it was to constantly understand the current context on the area we were building upon, design our concepts and validate or invalidate what we should build. Basically through rebuilding the foundations and then designing the key features piece by piece, and then evaluating whether this would work, so we can get to a degree of confidence that could hedge our bets that this feature would be well received and then move forward to the next key area. A product like this isn't complete unless built and released into the market. And as a designer, there’s always friction in terms of what gets designed and what gets built.  We had to manage the tradeoffs of what we could build and what was important to build, and we prioritised all those within our product road map and how we will roll it out. Concurrently, while our development team were building I was a constant presence to offer any changes if something wasn't possible, and to ensure that what was designed was built correctly through doing Design QA on everything we released.

Outcome

Outcome Ultimately, we released a fully functional app on Android and on iOS in 7 months. With an improved interface, extra features, and a scalable app that we can build new features on. Our further outcomes also included: • 98% Adoption rate by :Different Owners. • 4 stars on the Apple store and Google play store. • Initial 47 NPS rating for :Differents technology which includes the App.
